| Vision, commitment,
and leadership are essential for systemic
change in higher education. It is important
to initiate change at every level so
institutional transformation is pervasive
rather than localized. Research has
shown that revitalized mission statements,
organizational restructuring, curricular
transformation, and the appointment
of minorities and women to high-level
administrative positions contribute
to a more engaged and equitable campus
environment. These outcomes are further
strengthened when faculty and staff
development programs, community outreach,
and comprehensive student support services
are also designed to enhance the educational
advantages of diversity.
In this section we share examples
of strategies, plans, policies, and
practices for making diversity central
to comprehensive institutional change.
