Making It in Higher Education

Develop a group of friends and be strategic in choosing them. Think about the areas you would like to learn more about, administration for instance, and find several women to talk with.

Engage several people as mentors.

Ask women colleagues to lunch.

Let others know you're interested in other jobs.

If you are a senior female faculty member or administrator, be available to counsel junior colleagues.

Senior women should also participate on boards of other colleges and nonprofit organizations to extend the reach of the network.

If you move from one state to another, get the name and contact information for an ACE/NIP state coordinator who can ease your transition
