4th International Conference on Research in Access and Developmental Education
Deadline: April 30, 2008
Conference: September 24-27, 2008
Condado Plaza Hotel, San Juan, Puerto Rico
The transition to a global economy presents opportunities and challenges to industries, governments, and educational institutions in all nations. the connection between educational oportunity and economic well-being becomes more apparent as those populations underserved in higher education constitute a disproportinate share of the world's lower economic echeleons. Research clearly shows that there is a direct relationship between the educational attainment of a region's citizes and the economic development of the region. Systematic interventions-variously described as educational opportunity, remedial, developmental, access, or learning assistance programs-contribute to the educational attainment of diverse populations; therefore the role of these programs is of increasing importance if quality of life and economic security are to be universally realized. The Conference Program Committee welcomes proposals on any topic related to developmental or access education and related support services for underprepared college students. Proposals should, however, be grounded in research or represent completed or ongoing evaluation or research. Appropriate proposals might include reports of program activities based on research and theory, reviews of assessment instruments and techniques, results from master's theses or doctoral dissertations, reports of ongoing program evaluation, reviews of literature, models for evaluation, summaries and analyses of state or local data collection activities, or research-based theories or models, especially those including application to goals related to diversifying higher education.

Call for Papers: Intercultural Education as Social Justice
Manuscripts must be submitted by November 15, 2008.
Intercultural Education, the journal of the International Association for Intercultural Education, requests manuscripts for an upcoming special issue focused on ?intercultural education as social justice.?
Intercultural Education is a global forum for the analysis of issues dealing with education in plural societies. It provides educational professionals with the knowledge and information that can assist them in contributing to the critical analysis and the implementation of intercultural education. Topics covered include: terminological issues, education and multicultural society, intercultural communication, human rights and anti-racist education, pluralism and diversity in a democratic frame work, pluralism in post-communist and in post-colonial countries, migration and indigenous issues, refugee issues, language policy issues, curriculum and classroom organisation, and school development.
This particular issue will focus more specifically on engaging in intercultural education practice that purposefully transcends ?heroes and holidays? or ?celebrating diversity? approaches and that sets as its goal the establishment and maintenance of equitable and just learning environments for all students. We are looking for contributions that push the boundaries of intercultural and multicultural education, that draw on analyses of systemic inequities, that engage critical theories. We are interested, as well, in research articles that critically analyze dominant intercultural education discourses, policies, and practices?especially those that may contribute to inequities rather than eliminating them. All submissions should address explicitly the importance of social justice in relation to intercultural education.
You are welcome to send an expression of intent to submit, which should include a 50-or-fewer-word description of your proposed topic and focus.Manuscripts must follow the journal guidelines.
